Spring 2023 Week 3: Community Outreach x El Sol Scratch-a-thon

On the weekend of April 15-16, 2023, WICS Outreach Committee hosted a 2-day Scratch event in collaboration with El Sol Academy’s elementary and middle school girls. On the first day, our Outreach members taught our Scratch curriculum filled with interactive demos and code-alongs, and all our students and everyone were able to make short animations based on all the taught material such as the use of loops, costume changes, conditionals, etc. On Day 2, our students formed groups of two and worked, with the help of WICS mentors, on creating their own projects from start to finish using Scratch within the duration of the event hackathon-style. At the end of the day, each pair demoed and presented their projects to everyone, with three teams winning various prizes sponsored by the UCI Office of Access and Inclusion.
