Scratch-a-thon 2026
WICS Outreach members had the pleasure of hosting 6-8th grade students from El Sol Academy, teaching them about coding fundamentals through Scratch. On Day 1, Outreach members presented interactive lessons to familiarize students with the Scratch language. We also took a walk around campus to show them more of UCI. On Day 2, the students spent their time creating their own game or story with the Scratch skills they practiced the day before. Winners of various project categories were given a prize as well! The students greatly enjoyed delving into beginner-level coding, interacting with their peers, and experiencing mentorship from WICS members.
Highlights:
- learning about coding basics such as variables and loops on Day 1
- taking a tour around Ring Road and taking a picture with Peter the Anteater near Student Center
- Kahoot review on Day 2 about Scratch
- working on projects
- doing a gallery walk within the students and playing each others’ games
